The company was established in 1988 by Partners Paul Kiss and Phil Jones, Civil Engineers with over 20 years' experience in ground engineering and specialist underpinning. In 1991 they incorporated the activities of Pynford and have since established Abbey Pynford as a benchmark for excellence within the ground engineering industry. Abbey Pynford's reputation for outstanding quality and service is renowned throughout the UK.

One illustration of Abbey Pynford's ground engineering expertise - a project that captured the public imagination and attracted worldwide media attention - is the moving the famous Belle Tout Lighthouse away from the dangerous eroding chalk cliffs at Beachy Head. The project involved excavating ground around the lighthouse, erecting beams to support the walls, raising the lighthouse using 30 computer controlled jacks connected to a hydraulic engine, installing sliding tracks and then lowering 850 tons of lighthouse onto greased skates. Then, very slowly, the whole lighthouse was moved 17 meters away from the cliff edge
