Bond Street Station Upgrade: secant bored piling continues

Fri, 17/08/2012 - 11:08

Abbey Pynford continue with the retrofit Basement works at Bond Street Station to form a new ticket hall with the construction of one of the most complex restricted access secant bored pile walls ever constructed in this country.

Each 450mm diameter pile, designed incorporating concrete, steel and marine design standards, contains nearly three tonnes of reinforcement which is installed using a specially fitted and adapted gantry hoist. Female piles 5m deep through water bearing sands and gravels are constructed using a special mix to allow coring using the lightweight mini piling rigs. Abbey Pynford are following a defined installation sequence and work will take 6 weeks over two shifts a day; each pile taking between seven and ten hours to complete. These piles are designed to take massive bending moments and shear forces due to site limitations and access restrictions which limit the number and size of piles installed.
