Restricted Access Piling - Newbury Park Station

Abbey Pynford Provide New Access For Newbury Park

Restricted access mini piles for new lifts and walkways at Newbury Park Station.

Restricted Access Piling at Newbury ParkStationNewbury Park Station is on the London Underground Central Line and connects the northeast suburbs of London and parts of Essex to the rest of the London network.

London Underground Limited had a program of works to construct new lifts and walkways, providing a step-free access from entrance level to platform level to make the station fully accessible for all.

“We had to organise our deliveries to arrive out of peak times as they were coming through Newbury Park Bus Station and the main station carpark.”  Anna Freeman, Contracts Manager

Abbey Pynford was employed by Birse Metro Limited to construct piled foundations for two new lifts and walkways.

Forty two augered piles, each of 300mm diameter were installed to a maximum depth of 18.5m and a combination of fourteen, 300mm diameter piles and ten, 450mm diameter piles were installed in a contiguous piled wall to a maximum depth of 10.5m. The piles were cased to 3m depth due to there being unstable ground conditions near the surface.

The station had a particularly sensitive access point due to the works being carried out in traffic hours alongside the main entrance to the station and carparks. Abbey Pynford had to organise all deliveries to work around peak traffic times and maintain pedestrian walkways, particularly as a lot of school children use the station to commute to school.

The location of the main cable run for the station created another problem as Abbey Pynford had to cross it to achieve piling the contiguous wall and also pile within 200mm of the edge of these cables. A ramp was erected and the mini piling rig was manoeuvred across it.

“This is a prime example of Abbey Pynford’s efficient way of working within a restricted area.”

Good housekeeping was also a vital factor on this sensitive site. Passengers could see into the working area from the street and all public areas had to be fully protected so mess and disruption was kept to a minimum.
